Counter Service
a chrome diner off the strip, neon in the windows, between one and three in the morning
There is a diner on the way back from everywhere: chrome outside, red vinyl inside, a neon sign in each window that reads backwards from the counter. It is open all night and the light does not change: pink from the signs, green from the strip across the road, a hard white from the kitchen pass. Satin and crepe do well in it. Most faces do not, which is why the hoops are small and the hair stays down.
Cobalt is the thread. An oversized wool blazer over a leather wrap mini, a crepe blazer with a pointed hem over navy trousers, a belted blazer over a pleated leather mini, a blazer dress with sleeves folded like paper, an organza top with sleeves that need their own booth. Then two that disagree: a burgundy satin dress with ruffled shoulders in the back booth, and a blush satin blazer with a tulle skirt that takes up two stools.
What repeats is the posture: elbows on the counter, chin in hand, looking at the window instead of the menu. What changes is how much of the outfit is tailoring and how much is not. Worn for real, it is the look you still have on at two in the morning because the night did not require a change, lapels open, the shoes you started in. Order the pie. Nobody comes here for the coffee.
