a coin laundry three blocks from home, fluorescent tubes and backwards neon, two in the morning
The laundromat is three blocks from home and it never closes. Fluorescent tubes on the ceiling, a red neon sign in the window that reads backwards from inside, cream-coloured machines in two rows and a folding table nobody has used for folding in years. The light is flat and a little green; satin goes dull in it until it moves, and then it looks like liquid.
Burgundy and blush do the talking. A satin midi under a sleeveless wool overlay with leather straps, sitting on the floor. A blush crinkled satin dress with tiers and ruched sleeves, leaning on the table. A burgundy wool drape jacket over a satin mini with croc over-the-knee boots, coming down the back stairs. A blush organza trench over a slip, a burgundy patent trench over black satin, and then one cobalt dress with a single balloon sleeve to argue with everyone.
What repeats is the fabric: satin against something harder, wool or leather or patent. What changes is how much coat is on. Worn for real, these are the clothes you still have on at two in the morning when the basket is full and the machines are free. Bring quarters. The dress is dry clean only; the rest of the night is not.
