Eleven in the morning and I am already overdressed. A burgundy satin jacket pleated in fine lines, tweed on the lapels and the waist, over a navy wool wrap skirt that folds into points. Burgundy is almost black, so it barely counts. Wear it to a long lunch.
A burgundy jacket of knife-pleated satin and sparkling tweed, cropped at the waist over a navy wool skirt that folds into points.
The jacket is the argument. Burgundy satin, pleated in fine lines that run from the shoulders down to a crossed front, with a tweed lapel and a tweed waistband shot through with a little metallic thread. The shoulders are round and high, the sleeves pushed to three-quarter length so the pleats bunch at the elbow. It stops at the waist, where the tweed takes over and the satin folds into a point.
Under it, a navy wool skirt cut on the diagonal, wrapped and pinned so the hem drops into handkerchief points at the knee. Dark, matte and heavy, it keeps the jacket from looking like a costume. Autumn and early winter, a café table at eleven, then lunch that turns into the afternoon. No tights while the weather allows, fine black tights after.
Burgundy counts as a colour. I am told this is growth.
