Velvet and embroidery

Velvet and embroidery is the corner of the wardrobe that leans toward the theatre. Crushed velvet in oxblood, emerald or a black that eats the light, dresses with embroidery dense enough to count as armour, sleeves and collars that were clearly somebody's life's work. These looks are for evening, full stop: dinners with candles, events with a step-and-repeat, the kind of hotel bar where the piano is real. Autumn and winter are their season; the rest of the year they wait in the dark, where velvet is happiest anyway.
