Rust taffeta belted jacket with a layered gauze midi skirt
A rust silk taffeta jacket with wide lapels and bunched sleeves, belted in black over a tiered handkerchief skirt, at the market.
The jacket is rust silk taffeta, crisp and loud, with wide notched lapels, oversized shoulders and sleeves that bunch at the forearm; it closes under a slim black leather belt and the hem flares out below it in stiff folds. The skirt underneath is three layers of cotton gauze in rust and ochre, each cut to a handkerchief point, falling to the knee at the shortest and mid-calf at the longest. Black leather ankle boots with a pointed toe.
The belt is what makes it: without it the jacket is a tent, with it the taffeta becomes a waist. Everything else stays matte so the taffeta shines alone. Autumn, overcast daylight, a vegetable market or a long walk through a town you do not know; the ankle boots keep it practical and the gauze keeps it moving.
Orange on a grey morning. The vegetables were jealous.
