Cobalt split-sleeve blazer dress over a satin wrap dress

A cobalt blazer with black satin lapel trim and sleeves split to the elbow, worn as a dress over a cobalt satin wrap dress with a handkerchief hem.

A blazer in cobalt felted wool, cut long enough to be a dress on its own, with peak lapels edged in a narrow band of black satin, a black satin welt at the chest pocket and black panels inset down both sides to pull the waist in. The sleeves are split from shoulder to elbow and left to hang open like short capes, so the forearm shows. It closes with one black tab at the waist. Underneath, a wrap dress in plain cobalt satin, a shade lighter, with a pointed handkerchief hem that drops below the wool at one side.

It is a cocktail look that will pass at a desk if the desk is in a loft. Autumn and spring, brick walls, steel windows, a city doing nothing outside. A pointed black pump, or a black knee boot when the wind starts. The satin shows at the lapel, the hem and the forearm and nowhere else; that is the whole trick.

One colour, two textures, sleeves that open on their own. I have stopped explaining them.

styling notes

  • Pointed black pump, or a black knee boot in the wind
  • Nothing at the neck; the satin lapel does it
  • Watch and ink out through the split sleeve
