A violet-blue blazer dress with one exaggerated puff sleeve, waist cut-outs and a single button, with black ankle boots on a balcony at dusk.

A blazer dress in violet-blue wool suiting, cut like a jacket and worn as a dress: peak lapels, one covered button at the waist, flap pockets, and a hem that stops well above the knee. The left sleeve is a full leg-of-mutton puff that pleats into a fitted forearm; the right side is sleeveless, with the lapel running up into a halter strap. Cut-outs at both sides of the waist pull the shape in without a belt.

It is a cocktail dress for people who would rather wear a suit. Black leather ankle boots with a pointed toe keep it from tipping into evening; the colour does the rest. Spring and autumn, a stone balcony at blue hour, no tights until it gets properly cold.

One sleeve is a statement. Two would be a costume.
