Black velvet suit with oversized cuff buttons
A black velvet blazer with three oversized matte buttons on each cuff, a black satin camisole and matching velvet trousers, leaning on a hotel bar.
A velvet suit with one idea and it lives on the sleeve. The blazer is black crushed velvet, single-breasted with peak lapels, a single button and flap pockets, cut neat through the shoulder; at each cuff sit three oversized matte black buttons the size of coins, in a row. Under it a black satin camisole with a V neckline, and matching black velvet trousers, straight and slightly flared at the hem.
It is for the hour when the bar lights go amber and the velvet starts to look like it has depth. Wear the jacket closed if standing, open if leaning; the cuff buttons want to rest on something, a bar, a table, a car door. Autumn and winter, a cocktail hour that becomes dinner. Nothing shiny with it except the satin.
Three buttons on a cuff. None of them do anything. Neither do I before the first drink.
