A red leather sleeveless wrap top with a woven cowl collar over red linen wide-leg trousers with deep pleats, in a crowded street market at midday.

A sleeveless top in soft red leather, wrapped across the body with a diagonal seam and an asymmetric pointed hem, with a wide cowl collar in a coarse red linen weave attached at the neck and folded over itself like a scarf. Below it, high-waisted trousers in the same red linen, cut very wide with deep front pleats and a curved leg that drops to the ankle and catches the wind.

Red from the collar down, in a market full of other people's colours. Spring and summer, daytime, a city you are walking through for the first time: a flat sandal or a low heel, no bag you have to hold, nothing on the arms. The leather is the one hot decision in the outfit; the linen is the apology for it.

Leather at midday in July. Every year I say I have learned, and every year this.
