Two colours, one jacket. Surprising, I know. A satin blazer spliced in emerald and navy, waist cut-outs and long draped panels, over navy wide-leg trousers. Platform boots. One layer only; a tank would ruin the line. Rooftop, then the street.

A satin blazer spliced in emerald and navy, with a diagonal navy band, waist cut-outs and long draped panels, over navy wide-leg trousers on a rooftop garden.

The blazer is a single-button satin jacket cut in two colours: emerald for the body and sleeves, navy for a wide band that runs diagonally from the right lapel to the left hip and for one lapel. The waist is opened at both sides into cut-outs, and from the hips two long panels, emerald on one side and navy on the other, fall almost to the knee like the tails of a coat that changed its mind. The trousers are plain navy wool crepe, high-waisted and wide, and the boots are black lug-sole platforms with a chunky heel.

It is worn as a single layer, which is what keeps the V from looking like office. The trousers stay quiet so the panels can move, and the boots pull it away from evening and towards a city walk in autumn or spring. It does events, dinners and cocktail hours where a plain suit would disappear into the crowd. Hair straight and centre-parted, small hoops, the smartwatch and the bead bracelet as always.

Two colours, one button. I am not a person who negotiates with lapels.

styling notes

  • Blazer as a single layer; a tank kills the line
  • Keep the trousers plain so the panels move
  • Chunky boot, not a heel, to hold it on the street
