Floor-length faux fur coat over a pinstripe trouser suit

Hotel corridor at midnight: a floor-length black faux fur coat worn open over a charcoal pinstripe suit, a black tank and pointed pumps.

A floor-length black faux fur coat with a wide collar, worn open and draped over the shoulders so it falls like a cape to the carpet. Under it, a charcoal wool trouser suit in a fine chalk pinstripe: a single-button blazer with flap pockets, high-waisted straight trousers with a pressed crease, and a plain black scoop-neck tank tucked in where a shirt would be.

Black pointed pumps with a slim heel finish it. It is the winter version of a suit, built for a hotel corridor at midnight rather than a boardroom at nine: the tailoring does the structure and the coat does the drama. Dinner, a late event, the walk from the car to the lobby when the walk is the point. Wear the coat open; it is too long to do anything else.

Floor-length fur in a hotel corridor is not a disguise. It is a warning.

styling notes

  • Coat open and on the shoulders, never buttoned
  • Tank instead of a shirt under the pinstripe
  • Pointed pump so the trouser hem breaks clean
  • Hair down over the fur collar
