The only colour in the market and it is on her. A burgundy leather jacket, fitted through the body with a gathered puff at the shoulder that drops into a slim sleeve, a two-way zip left open and the hem sitting at the hip. Under it a black ribbed scoop-neck tank, and below it straight-leg black wool trousers with a pressed crease, cropped just above a pair of black penny loafers.

This is the day version of leather: no hardware beyond the zip, no shine, the sleeve doing the talking. Jacket open, tank tucked, trousers short enough to show the loafer. Autumn and spring mornings, a market before ten, coffee carried in the hand that is not holding anything else. If it gets warm, the jacket comes off and the outfit gets duller; that is the deal.
