Silver. Below the waist only. I have rules. A single-button black blazer with the shoulders sliced open, worn as a top, over a silver faux leather mini skirt cut to a handkerchief point. Black square-toe ankle boots. Metallic plus a stiletto is too much, even for me. Late, downtown.

A single-button black blazer with the shoulders sliced open, over a silver faux leather skirt cut on the bias to a handkerchief point.

The blazer is a fitted single-button black wool jacket with the shoulder seams cut away, so the sleeve hangs from a strap of fabric and the top of the arm shows. It is worn closed on one button and open above it, as a top on its own. The skirt is a silver faux leather mini with a curved yoke and an asymmetric overlay that falls to a handkerchief point at the knee on one side and stops well above the knee on the other. Black leather ankle boots with a square toe and a low block heel keep the bottom half quiet.

The pairing works because the blazer is severe and the skirt is not. For evening, keep it exactly this minimal; for daytime, a fine black knit underneath and the same boots. Spring and early autumn, when the wind on a rooftop still counts as weather.

The shoulders are missing on purpose. Everything else is where it should be.

styling notes

  • One button closed, the blazer worn as a top
  • Square-toe boot, not a stiletto, to offset the metallic
  • Hair down and straight, no other silver anywhere
