Dark, sharp and ready for a long walk: a black base, one piece that catches the light, shoes you can actually walk in and a jacket for the air conditioning. Las Vegas at night is less about dress codes than about distances and temperature.

I live here, so let me save you the first mistake: the city looks small from the window and enormous on foot. Every block on the Strip is longer than it looks, every lobby is a walk, and the air conditioning inside is set for people in suits. Outside, the desert does what deserts do. In summer the night stays hot; from November to March it drops fast once the sun goes.
So the outfit has two jobs. It has to read in low light, because everything here happens in low light, and it has to survive moving between a cold room and a warm street four times before midnight. That is why most of what I wear after dark is black, structured and layered once. Not a costume, and not a gown for the sake of it. Four rules, with the looks that prove them.
1A jacket for the cold rooms
The coldest place in Las Vegas in August is a dining room. A blazer or a cropped leather jacket over something light solves it: on at the table, off on the terrace, over the shoulders in between. Keep it short or sharp so it does not fight the rest of the look.
The light here is neon, chandeliers and screens, and all of it is low. Matte black disappears in it, which is the point, but give it one surface that reflects: metallic trousers, a silver panel, a faux leather skirt. One. Two shiny pieces and you look lit from the inside, which is not the same as dressed.
Whatever you plan, you will walk more than you planned: from the car to the door, through a lobby the size of a terminal, across a bridge over the boulevard. Boots carry a short dress and a long night better than a thin heel. Knee boots with a mini, thigh-high boots with a wrap skirt, over-the-knee with a blazer dress: the boot finishes the line and the feet survive.
Black moves between a dinner, a bar and whatever comes after, and it forgives a long night. Make it interesting with cut and texture instead of colour: a one-shoulder bodysuit with wide trousers, leather on leather, a sleeve that takes up a room. When I wear colour it is news. Black is the rest of the week.
Is there a dress code on the Las Vegas Strip at night?
Not on the street, and most casino floors do not enforce one. Clubs, some lounges and the better restaurants do: usually no sportswear, no flip-flops, sometimes no trainers. If the night ends somewhere with a door, dress for the door.
What should I wear in Las Vegas at night in winter?
Something warmer than you expect. Desert nights from November to March get properly cold, so a leather jacket or a wool blazer is not optional, and boots make more sense than sandals.
Can I wear heels in Las Vegas?
Yes, but plan for the distances. A block heel or a platform boot covers far more ground than a stiletto, and the walk between places is always longer than it looks.
Is all black too much for Las Vegas at night?
No. It is the most useful colour in the city after dark: it works in low light, moves between a dinner and a club, and lets one shiny piece do its job.
