I said no prints. This slipped through. A black leather bustier with a band of cut-outs. Wide-leg trousers in a smudged black and silver jacquard. Thin-strap sandals. It looks like static on an old television. I find that calming. Wear it under olive trees. Cropped blazer when it cools.

A black leather bustier with a strappy cut-out band, worn with high-waisted wide-leg trousers in a smudged black and silver jacquard. Olive trees optional.

The bustier is black leather, moulded cups with a straight neckline and a band of vertical straps and cut-outs below the cups that stops just above the trousers. The trousers are the loud part: high-waisted, wide-leg, in a jacquard of black, gunmetal and silver that looks like brushed-off paint from a distance and metal thread up close.

Black leather sandals with a single thin strap, and nothing else. This is a hot-weather evening look; the leather is short enough not to suffer, and the trousers move enough to catch a breeze. It walks from a courtyard aperitivo to dinner without a jacket, and in spring it takes a cropped black blazer over the top. Keep jewellery to the small hoops and the watch, the print is doing the talking.

Olive trees are the only thing I let upstage a trouser.

styling notes

  • A plain black top always; the print needs a quiet neighbour
  • Sandal strap as thin as it goes, no platform
  • Cropped black blazer for the first cold evening, nothing longer
