It's a blazer. Today it's also the dress. Charcoal herringbone wool, oversized, pulled in with a wide leather obi belt, knotted, not buckled. Tan mules. Blazer as a dress, and a tan shoe. That's my risk budget for the month. Wear it to the office, or past one. No tights until November.

An oversized herringbone wool blazer worn as a dress, cinched with a wide black leather obi belt and finished with a silk neck scarf and tan mules.

The blazer is charcoal herringbone wool with padded shoulders and a double-breasted front, cut long enough to be worn as a dress and roomy enough to need a belt. The belt is the second piece: wide black leather, wrapped twice and knotted at the front like an obi, pulling the whole thing into a waist. A silk neck scarf in bone and grey stripes is tied at the throat.

Tan leather mules with a slim heel and no tights keep it from turning into a suit. This is autumn and winter workwear that survives the walk to dinner: the blazer does the office, the belt and the mules do the evening. Add opaque tights when the temperature drops, and swap the mules for a pointed boot if it rains.

A blazer as a dress is a commitment. The belt is what keeps it from looking like a borrowed jacket.

styling notes

  • Belt wide and knotted, not buckled; the blazer needs the fabric pulled in
  • No tights in September, opaque ones from November
  • Tan shoe against charcoal; black would flatten it
