Loft Light
industrial lofts with brick walls and tall grid windows, sun coming in sideways before noon
Same kind of room every time: an old industrial floor turned into somewhere to live or work, brick on one side, white plaster on the other, and a wall of steel-framed glass that turns the morning into stripes. We shot between ten and one, when the light is high enough to clear the buildings opposite and low enough to still come in at an angle. Nobody moved a lamp.
The thread is surface. Satin catches the window and goes liquid: black trousers under a cut-out blazer, terracotta wide legs under a leather bustier, a wrap skirt that drapes to the calf, a rust blazer that reads almost orange against charcoal wool. Leather answers it in matte, as a bustier, as lapels, as a cropped biker, as the belt with the western buckle that holds the first look together. The embroidered peplum jacket is the outlier, black on black with silver thread, and it belongs here for the same reason the rest do: it needs a hard light from the side to show what it is.
These are clothes for the hours when most people are at a desk. A blazer that works belted and buttoned as a dress, a biker over satin for a lunch that will run long, a bustier and trousers for a studio visit. Keep the shoes thin, keep the palette to black, rust and terracotta, and stand near the glass. The windows have not been cleaned. Better for the photographs.
