Day Off
a city on a day off, from the first cafe to the last shop, morning sun to streetlight
A day off in a city, from the first coffee to the last stop. It starts at a cafe terrace in soft morning light, moves through a bakery window, a record shop, a florist's pavement and a bookshop with a cafe at the back, and ends at a bus shelter in the rain and under the fridge lights of a shop at two in the morning. The light changes from pale sun to lamp to neon; the clothes stay the same temperature.
What repeats is the shape. A long coat, always worn open: black wool, camel wrap, oversized bone, a blazer cut to the knee. Under it, a knit, usually ribbed, usually cream or black, sometimes striped. Below, trousers with width in them: mid-wash jeans, bone linen, olive cotton, black wool with a pressed crease. Boots with a pointed toe, or a loafer with a snaffle bar. What changes is the one colour allowed in: camel, olive, emerald satin, a stripe.
How it is worn: sleeves pushed up so the watch and the ink show, knit tucked or left loose depending on the trouser, nothing on the hands. The coat is the only thing that could come off, and it never does. A day off is not a day without opinions.
