A cropped black wool jacket with a leather panel and asymmetric lapels over a burgundy satin skirt gathered into a bubble hem, in a faded apartment.

A cropped black jacket in dense wool with a matte black leather panel set into the front, the lapels cut on a diagonal so one side folds over the other like a blade. It stops at the waist with a stepped hem. Below, a burgundy satin skirt gathered at the waist and caught up into a bubble at the hem, full enough to hold in one hand on the stairs.

The jacket is the structure and the skirt is the volume; nothing else is needed. Autumn and winter, an event where the room is older than the guests. A black pointed pump under the satin, hair down. Pick the skirt up with the left hand; the right one is for the banister.

The paint is peeling. The jacket is not.
