A gown with the skirt mostly missing. On purpose. Black satin, strapless, the bodice folded flat, a peplum at the hip, then layered organza the rest of the way down. Black sandals, one thin strap. Forty degrees and this is my only concession. Hair down. Let the organza move.

A black satin column with a folded strapless bodice, a peplum like a turned page and layered organza where the skirt should be.

A strapless column gown in black satin with a bodice that folds over itself: one panel rises to a point, the other dips, so the neckline is asymmetric without trying. At the hip a stiff satin peplum curls away from the body like a turned page, and under it the skirt changes material entirely. The column continues in opaque black down the centre while layers of organza fall to the floor on both sides, open at the front.

It is worn with a single-strap black sandal and nothing else that needs describing. Hair straight, no straps, no sleeves. It belongs to an evening in a warm place, a courtyard before dinner, the hour when concrete finally gives the heat back.

Forty degrees and I chose floor length. Nobody is surprised.
