One pair of wide-leg trousers, three ways
The trousers are the only thing that never changes. High-waisted, wide through the leg, long enough to break over the shoe: cut like that, a pair of trousers stops being a bottom and becomes the architecture of the outfit. Everything above the waist is negotiable. In ivory with a matching blazer they read as a suit. In black with a knit and loafers they read as a day off. In olive linen with a rust lapel they read as dinner outside. Same shape, three rooms.
The suit version. Ivory trousers under an ivory wool crepe blazer and a satin shirt buttoned to the collar, sleeves pushed up so it reads as work and not as a costume. Black pointed heels are the only interruption. Nine in the morning, a chair that is nicer than the meeting.
The evening version, taken outside as the light goes. Olive linen trousers with the matching blazer, fitted through the waist, one lapel cut in rust so the whole thing stops being a suit and starts being a decision. Sleeves to the forearm, no shirt underneath. Dinner at eight, arrived at seven.
The day-off version. Black wool crepe trousers, a ribbed sleeveless turtleneck and penny loafers, flat on purpose. The trousers do the draping, the knit keeps the neck covered and the arms out, and the coffee does the rest. Nothing here needs a reason. Sunday, green armchair, second cup.
