One black blazer, three ways
The blazer is the most overworked garment in any wardrobe and the most underused. Black wool, a built shoulder, long enough to cover the hip: that is the only rule. After that it is a question of what goes under it. Satin makes it a suit that moves. A bustier makes it a dinner. A sports top makes it the reason nobody asks why I am in leggings. Same jacket, three rooms.
The suit version. Black wool with a padded shoulder, open over a satin cami, with high-waisted satin trousers that pool slightly at the floor. Wool on top, liquid below the waist: it reads as serious until I move. One hand in the pocket is the only accessory. Ten o'clock, a concrete room that suits it.
The evening version, in a gilded hotel lounge. The blazer stops being worn and starts being carried, dropped over the shoulders above a leather and lace bustier and black satin trousers. Strappy sandals, nothing at the neck. A jacket on the shoulders says I might leave early. I rarely do.
The day-off version. A long black blazer over an olive sports top and panelled leggings, with a water bottle where a handbag would be. The blazer does all the work here, which is the point: it turns gym clothes into a choice. The sidewalk, eight in the morning, no mirror required.
